Steve Cohen has proven that he’s not shy about the fact that he wants to spend money. Although, I’d argue his approach on the field is very misguided. Cohen doesn’t want to spend his money on players. he also has plans to make Citi Field more of a destination spot.
A recent story by Front Office Sports indicates that Cohen has plans to build a Casino near Citi Field. Some MLB clubs have sportsbooks near the ballpark, but building a casino would be an entirely different animal.
“There’s nothing going on. The only thing you can do at Citi Field is get your hubcap changed or maybe get back a catalytic converter,” Cohen said at a Sportico conference. “The way I would describe it is 50 acres of cement.”
“I have tons of ideas I want to implement,” he said. “You can’t spend an unlimited amount of money, so you’ve got to budget. And also, dealing with the underinvestment that I had to deal with coming in, I call it the money pit.”
For the record, I appreciate his transparency and he’s not wrong. I’ve been to Citi Field a few times. There really isn’t much going on outside of the stadium. You got McFadden’s and then that’s pretty much it. It’s a huge parking lot but not much else going on. Building a real casino near the stadium would be a huge draw and would definitely bring more people to the area.
Apparently, NYCFC has plans to build a $780 million soccer-specific stadium adjacent to Citi Field too.
