The Kevin Durant trade rumors turned into nothing this offseason. However, if you ask Stephen Curry, he will tell you that he would have absolutely supported a Kevin Durant return even if it sounds crazy on paper.
A potential trade likely would have included Andrew Wiggins along with some other young guys like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. None of that matters. Curry was very complimentary of Durant in a recent interview.
VIA Rolling Stone:
“If you said, ‘Oh, KD’s coming back, and we’re gonna play with him,’ I had so much fun playing with him those three years, I’d be like, ‘Hell, yeah!’” Curry said. Then you have to think: What does that actually mean? What does it look like?
“You tell me I’m playing with [current Warriors teammates Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, and Draymond Green], I’m like, ‘Hell, yeah!’ There’s all types of emotion and things that happen to the league.”
“If anybody’s saying that you wouldn’t entertain that conversation — no disrespect to anybody on our team — but you don’t know how things work. But you also understand, like, if we run this thing back, I’ve got complete confidence in my team that we can win it again, as constructed.”
“I was never hesitant. The idea of playing with KD and knowing who he is as a person, from our history in those three years, I think KD’s a really good dude. I think he is misunderstood,” Curry said.
“I think he has had certain things happen in his life that hurt his ability to trust people around him, in a sense of making him feel safe at all times. So all of those things, I understand, having played with him and gotten to know him. I love that dude.”
Nothing Curry says here is surprising. The Warriors were favorites every single time a healthy version of the KD Warriors stepped onto the court. If Curry wants to win ANOTHER ring, an argument could be made that adding Durant is a hell of a way to do it.
Just so we’re clear, this another small but important reason why Curry is the GOAT point guard. Curry is a team first guy. No issues taking a step back to let Durant shine and do his thing. Curry’s ability to mesh with other stars is just so important and it’s something he’s never gotten credit for.
Could you imagine the cry babies that would have come out of the woodwork if the Warriors got KD back this offseason? There may have been riots on the Twittersphere.
