The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016. I just want to know when Steeler fans will stop lying to themselves. They’re essentially the Marvin Lewis Bengals’ at this point. Stuck and squarely in the middle. Over the last three years, Pittsburgh is 28-22-1. Slightly above average and painfully boring. At some point, we have to have a talk about TJ Watt.
Two things can be true; Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season and Pittsburgh doesn’t resemble the modern NFL in any way. Tomlin is good enough of a coach to keep this team afloat but they’re not really relevant either. Tomlin is a good leader but it’s also clear that he doesn’t understand offense. Pittsburgh had the 28th (17.9 points per game) scoring offense this past year and held onto Matt Canada far too long.
This team isn’t going anywhere. They’re totally irrelevant and may as well be the Cowboy Cerrone of the NFL. UFC fans know how it works when Cerrone fights. If you can’t beat him you’re not a real contender. If you can beat him, it’s merely a stepping stone to bigger and better things. It’s been four straight Wildcard exits for Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
Are Steeler fans willing to be honest with themselves? You’re not going anywhere. Are you willing to do the right thing or lose because you’re too sentimental?
I’d argue it’s irresponsible to not trade Watt. The former Wisconsin product is arguably the best pass rusher in the sport. It’s time to cash the chip in order to build the next great team in Pittsburgh. You could get a king’s ransom for Watt.
Plus, Watt is also turning 30 at the start of the 2024-25 NFL Season. He missed seven games last year and wasn’t available for the playoff game this year. Watt has immense value but it’s a stock that won’t be at peak performance forever. The Steelers aren’t winning anything over the next three years.
If your argument is we don’t want to piss off the fans then maybe you shouldn’t be the person in charge. Be honest with yourself or suffer the consequences later. It’s time to move on from the franchise sack leader so that a better tomorrow can come to fruition.
