Stars Acquire Mikael Granlund, Cody Ceci Via Trade With Sharks

Nils Lundkvist is out for the remainder of the season and Tyler Seguin has been placed on LTIR along with hip after his hip procedure. Shortly after, the Stars have dipped into their LTIR pool money and have made a splash trade with the San Jose Sharks. Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci are on their way to Dallas.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff was the first to report the details of the news. Kevin Weekes at ESPN was the first to alert us that the trade was happening.

To #SJSharks: 2025 DAL 1st Round Pick, Cond. 2025 WPG 4th Round Pick that can upgrade to 2025 3rd Round if Dallas advances to 2025 Stanley Cup Final.

The Stars are taking on Granlund and Ceci at full boat. Both players are free agents after the conclusion of this season. Maybe the Stars re-sign one or both but it’s probably more likely that both are pure rentals given how many young players Dallas has to get extended. Getting an extension done with Wyatt Johnston isn’t going to be cheap. Time will tell on that part though.

Do The Penguins Already Regret The Mikael Granlund Trade?

San Jose gets a first round pick and a conditional fourth round pick that can become a third if Dallas makes the Stanley Cup finals. Nice job by Mike Grier here who collects another first round pick for a player he essentially got as a throw in to the Erik Karlsson trade. Granlund posted 60 points last season and has 45 points in 52 games this season. Granlund really rebuilt his stock playing with the Sharks compared to the Penguins.
