Starling Marte Traded to Athletics

Starling Marte, one of the best outfielders available on the market has been traded. Jeff Passan was first on the news.

Starling Marte is headed to the A’s, Jesus Luzardo is going to Marlins, sources tell ESPN. A 1-for-1 deal in which Miami will cover the entirety of Marte’s remaining contract — more than $4 million. Marte is a free agent this winter. Luzardo isn’t one until after the 2027 season.

The Marlins will be sending Marte in exchange for LHP Jesus Luzardo, a one-for-one trade in which Miami will be covering all of Marte’s remaining salary. The 32-year-old Marte finds himself traded again after being moved to Miami from the Diamondbacks in 2020. Injuries have held him back this season, as he missed five weeks in April and May with a fractured left rib, but Marte is currently having a good year, hitting .306/.407/.453, with seven home runs and 22 stolen bases.

Athletics Suiting Up For Playoff Push

This trade comes as no real surprise, as the Athletics currently hold a Wild Card spot and have playoff aspirations and then some. While Marte is not the player he was with the Pirates, the two-time gold glover should contribute to the Athletics in a multitude of ways, and he could be the piece they need to actually advance in the playoffs.

As for the Marlins, they are getting back a player they control until 2027. Luzardo was the 12th ranked prospect in baseball coming into 2020. The 23-year-old has underperformed in those two seasons since, posting a 5.20 era and 104 hits allowed over 97 innings. The good thing for the Marlins: they have some time to figure it out with him.
