Remember when everybody blasted the Bills for trading with the Chiefs on draft day? Kansas City executed a trade and moved up for Xavier Worthy. However, it turns out there was more than one suitor for the speedy Texas wide receiver. The Patriots were also heavily involved in trade talks with the Bills to try to move up to land Worthy.
Former NFL GM Michael Lombardi revealed this interesting nugget on the Pat McAfee Show:
The full details of the trade look like this.
I know people want to crush the Bills but that just doesn’t seem fair. Keep in mind, New England was picking 34. The Bills ended up pulling the trigger on Keon Coleman with pick 33 after moving down another spot in a trade with Carolina that helped them land Xavier Legette. There is just no guarantee Coleman would have been there with the Patriots pick the Bills would have gotten instead. Keep in mind, wide receivers flew off the board during that window of the draft. Five receivers got picked from picks 31-37.
Buffalo traded down twice and still got their guy. Giving Worthy to the Chiefs instead of a division rival was certainly a choice but Brandon Beane is tasked with improving his team. They accomplished that with these two trades while still ending up with Coleman.
The more important thing to be tracked is how Ja’Lynn Polk fairs instead. New England picked Polk in the second round, which I viewed as a huge reach. Time will tell if they would have been better off making the move for Worthy. Keep in mind, we also don’t know what New England was offering. Had they bucked up more, maybe the Bills would have taken their offer.
It remains to be seen if Worthy will actually make it as a prospect. His odds of making it seem a hell of a lot higher in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball and Andy Reid overseeing the talent development. If you want a quick refresher on Worthy’s skillset, don’t be shy to let that extra click fly to see the write-up we did on his draft profile!
