Washington Football Team safety Landon Collins suffered an Achilles injury in the team 25-3 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Collins will have an MRI today to confirm, but he is likely out for the rest of the season after requiring surgery. Should Washington head coach Ron Rivera give Eric Reid a call?
Deshazor Everett, Troy Apke, and 2020 seventh-round Kamren Curl could step up, but Washington may want to sign a veteran to replace him. Or, the team could search the free-agent pool.
Reid, who is currently an NFL free agent, played two seasons with the Carolina Panthers under head coach Ron Rivera. In 2019 he had one of his best seasons, posting 130 tackles in 16 games. Back in September, Rivera was asked about Reid.
“We’re in a fortunate position where we have Landon Collins. A guy like Eric Reid wouldn’t fit us here. But if we didn’t [have Collins], believe me, I’d call him… I think [Reid’s] a guy that has the ability to play in this league and hopefully, if somebody needs a strong safety, he’s a guy they would call.”
Ron Rivera
After Rivera’s comments back in September spread around, Reid reacted by showing love for his former head coach.
“I enjoyed playing for Coach Rivera,” Reid told the AP in a text message. “He’s the real deal. He has that reputation for a reason.”
Eric Reid
There is mutual respect between Ron Rivera and Eric Reid; they both think very highly of each other. It would not be shocking at all if Rivera gave Reid a call this week, with Washington lacking depth at the safety position.
