Shaquille O’Neal interested in Buying Suns with Jeff Bezos

Robert Sarver announced on September 21st that he would be selling the Suns and Mercury amidst a flurry of allegations involving racist, sexist and homophobic comments. This immediately opened up one of the most lucrative and profitable jobs in America. Interest from big moguls like Bob Iger and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison was speculated.

However, one of the more interesting potential suitors has been that of Hall of Fame basketball player Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq has done quite alright for himself in terms of money, with an estimated 400 million dollar net worth. But, it would put him nowhere near the estimated 2 billion dollars it would take to purchase Sarver’s share.

This means Shaquille O’Neal would need some financial help. Who better to give that help than one of the richest men on the planet, Jeffrey Bezos? Ever since the news became public, Bezos has been linked to potentially buying the team. For a guy who’s always looking to diversify his funds and make more money, it really does make sense.

The reports of Bezos’s interest frightened Shaquille O’Neal. He had initially thought about going in on the stakes himself, saying,

“Nobody on this planet can compete with Big Man JB, because you know what? I just ordered 50 things off Amazon today. Big Man JB got that money coming in.”

Despite Shaq’s joking manner, his fear regarding Bezos and his massive wealth rings true, with him later saying,

“Let me tell you something, I’m scared of Big Man JB. Shaq O’Neal is scared of Big Man JB.”

Quite the praise from Shaq here, who in his prime, was widely regarded as the scariest and most dominant player in the league. Despite this fear, Shaq hasn’t completely ruled out a partnership with Bezos, saying,

“If he wants me on board, I would gladly like to talk to him.”

It will be quite a while before Sarver officially sells his stakes of the Suns. It’s clear that once he does, Bezos will be a favorite to secure the team if he so desires to. And who knows? If Bezos does decide to buy the team, I could easily see him bringing Shaq on as a potential partner. He has 19 years of experience in the NBA, and surely would be able to give insight to Bezos, who may be a bit more tone-deaf regarding the NBA.
