Shannon Sharpe Rips Russell Wilson for his Attitude

It’s safe to say that this season has been a great disappointment for Russell Wilson and this Broncos team. The addition of Wilson was supposed to take this offense to the next level and make the Broncos real contenders in the AFC West. But at 4-11, the Broncos have produced one of the worst offenses in the NFL and it’s led many people to question the leadership of Wilson.

Making his opinions very clear on Wilson has been Hall of Fame tight end, Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe, who played with the Broncos for 12 years, absolutely ripped into Wilson and his ability to lead a team during a segment of his popular morning show with Skip Bayless.

Sharpe’s passion for his former team is put on full display during this three-minute rant. And bearing the brunt of Sharpe’s rage is none other than Wilson.

“They let Russ cook on Christmas and he burned the whole god dang meal, and everybody went hungry because they let Russ cook,” Sharpe said.

And after watching that Rams game, it’s hard to argue with him. Wilson had arguably his worst game of the year, which seemed impossible at this point with how badly he’s played. He went 15-for-27 for 214 yards with three interceptions, giving him a QBR of 54.2. To put it as Sharpe did, Wilson simply looked lost out there. He missed read after read and made several questionable throws en route to their 51-14 loss to the Rams.

But if you think that Sharpe let up at all on his former team and Wilson, then you would be sorely mistaken. Following the firing of Nathaniel Hackett, Sharpe went on another tirade with the focus of his anger once again going toward the once-great quarterback.

And during this tirade, Sharpe did not hold back one bit.

“I don’t know who the head coach is gonna be, but the first thing you do [is say], ‘Russell Wilson, I’m locking this office. You will no longer have an office. All those parking spaces you get the stadium, they’re gone too — because you’re putting yourself in front of the team,’” Sharpe said. “I said it before, I’ll say it again, and I stand by it: You ticked a lot of people off with your attitude, bro. You can come out here and talk about how we’re a team and I’m good with my teammates, but deep down inside, they’re seething, and I’m gonna leave it at that.”

During his rant, Sharpe also attempted to give an explanation for why Wilson has played so poorly this season. He referenced how Wilson used to be so great at improvising and working off script while at Seattle. But now in his older age, he’s no longer able to rely purely on his athleticism which is why we are seeing such a struggle.

While I can certainly agree with this statement, as it does look clear at times that Wilson has lost a step, this can’t be the only factor. A quarterback doesn’t just go from being a consensus top-10 to one of the worst in the league in one season. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Maybe Hackett had something to do with it, but with his departure, there will be no more excuses for the one-time Super Bowl champion.

If there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that Shannon Sharpe and Broncos fans everywhere are frustrated. This is a season in which you were supposed to be making a deep playoff run and making serious noise in the AFC. But up to this point, it’s been nothing but disappointment and heartbreak. The worst of it all is that they don’t have their own first-round pick this year, which would have seen them surely picking in the top five.

Wilson is still owed a lot of money, so for the foreseeable future, the Broncos are going to have to stick with him under center. Whoever they do bring in to take over as coach, they are stuck with him. Whether that’s going to be a good thing or another disaster is yet to be discovered.
