The Secret To Picking Defensemen In Fantasy Hockey

I take great pride in being the king of fantasy hockey. I still haven’t lost and am coming off a season where I totally dismantled ESPN’s fantasy “expert” Sean Allen. Today, I want to share some secrets on how to draft and why you’re likely making this key mistake.

Every draft is different and in a snake draft, you’re sort of handicapped on what pick you get. In the future when I do a salary cap league, I’ll provide insight for that. I can barely get people to do an auction league for football so let’s be patient at that. I can’t fix the sports industry in the blink of an eye.

With that said, the best strategy is to load up on as many high level forwards as you can. I’m not saying never take a defensemen early but it has to be the right defensemen. I’m also totally okay with ignoring the position until about pick 75. Then it’s time to start snagging them.

If you find yourself in a spot where you’re drafting but are in serious need of defensemen, I encourage you to use this trick when drafting. Before your draft, please check the lines over at Daily Faceoff. They’re a great tool to use on a nightly basis and are always up to date. Look through each time and figure out who is running the power play. That’s all you need to do. It’s that simple.

Sean Allen is a dope so you can’t trust the ESPN rankings. Don’t just blindly take the defensemen that’s rated the highest. Take the one on the best team that will be given first PP duties. That’s all you have to do.

It’s not totally fail proof but it’s the best chance to unearth the league winners. A perfect example of this is last year when I encouraged you to pick Erik Karlsson. He was ranked way too low last year and was a total league winner. You’re welcome. Vince Dunn is another perfect example who got the PP duties and took off.

That’s all you’re really looking for. I’ll give you another perfect example. Jared Spurgeon is a better defenseman than Calen Addison. I also don’t care because there is no upside with Spurgeon. The upside that Addison runs away with the PP job in Minnesota is what matters. Addison could fail but it’s not even the point. It’s the reason behind the dart throw is how you win your league.
