Scream 7 faces huge shake-up after two leads will not reprise roles

The new Scream 7 has completely imploded over the past couple of weeks. Scream fans and overall horror fans alike will not be getting a new film anytime soon.

Scream, or “Scream 5” as most fans called it, rebooted the franchise in 2022 with a new core of characters. There was an awesome mix of new characters and legacy characters from the original trilogy in the late 1990’s.

Scream VI came out in 2023 and proved the franchise was still going strong with the new reboot characters. Unfortunately, now news broke that lead actresses Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera will not be back for Scream 7.

Ortega (Tara) and Barrera (Samantha) played the Carpenter sisters, who were the main protagonists of the reboot. These two along with their friends Chad Meeks-Martin, played by Mason Gooding, and Mindy Meeks-Martin, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown, made up the core four. These characters had wonderful chemistry together and were phenomenal on screen facing off against Ghost Face. However, the franchise will now have to go in a different direction.

Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7 due to her social media posts on the Israel and Palestine situation. Her posts were interpreted as anti-Semitic, said a Spyglass spokesperson, according to Variety. A day later, it was reported that Jenna Ortega would not return in Scream 7 due to scheduling conflicts with the filming of Netflix’s Wednesday.

Even though the timing seems a bit odd, it was said that these two situations were not related to each other. Ultimately, one thing is clear Scream 7 just lost its two main characters.

What does this mean for Scream 7?

Scream 7 was confirmed earlier this year when it was announced that directing duties would go to Christopher Landon. The group Radio Silence had directed the past two films, but they were not returning for the upcoming film, meaning the new Scream was going to feel a bit different than the newest sequels.

As of right now, there is not much information out there about the seventh installment.

Fans of the series have been crying out to get the face of the franchise back. Neve Campbell, who plays the series final girl Sydney Prescott, has only been absent for one film which was Scream VI. The Scream franchise is no stranger to bringing back legacy characters from past movies, meaning there could be some surprise characters from other films returning in the new one.

Overall, there is no release date for Scream 7 and fans will have to wait on new news surrounding the next project.
