Saquon Barkley’s unexpected retirement would mirror the suddenness of his career’s most iconic moment—a gravity-defying reverse hurdle over Jacksonville Jaguars defender Jarrian Jones, now immortalized on the cover of Madden NFL 26.
Despite a history marred by ACL and ankle injuries, Barkley has defied expectations, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory and earning a spot in the exclusive “Madden 99 Club” with a 99 overall rating.
It’s been a match made in heaven, paying off hugely for both parties. But how long can Eagles fans expect this last? Well, according to Saquon Barkley himself, it may not be for much longer.
While on former NFL player and Eagle Chris Long’s podcast “Green Light”, Saquon made some comments that indicate he could be hanging them relatively soon.
“I’ll probably be one of those guys that it’ll be out of nowhere. I’ll probably just wake up one day, whether it’s next year or two years or four years, and justo be like, ‘Yeah, it’s over,’”
Barkley also took the time to mention the career of one of his favorite runninbacks of all time Barry Sanders. Beleiving his career and length with be simialr to that of the Lions hall of famer.
“One of my favorite players of all time, probably my favorite player of all time, is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day it’ll be out of nowhere. I’ll probably be ballin’ and just be like, yeah, call it quits,”
I suppose none of this should be a big surprise. Barkley has been riddled with injuries dating back to his days at Penn State. With the way he can move at his size? It’s only a matter of time before the body can no longer handle that.
Saquon Barkley has found a second life with the Philadelphia Eagles. His career didn’t seem to be going anywhere; now he is a clear top running back in the NFL. Let’s just see how long that remains the case.
As the 2025 season looms, the Philadelphia Eagles look poised for another deep playoff run. At the heart of it all is Saquon Barkley—still electric, still defying expectations. Whether it ends with another Lombardi Trophy or an unexpected exit, one thing’s clear: Barkley’s story is far from over, and this chapter might be his most thrilling yet.
