The San Francisco Giants have lost the sweepstakes of some pretty big free agents this offseason. It’s a reason to be upset if you’re a Giants fan, but some of them are just taking it too far. This fanbase is beyond spoiled and their behavior after the Carlos Correa news is just laughable.
Before the Correa incident, fans were blue balled by Jon Heyman when he reported Aaron Judge signing with the Giants. That obviously didn’t happen as he returned to the Yankees, leaving Giants fans in disbelief.
Fast forward to Dec. 13, when it was reported Correa was going to sign a 13-year deal with the Giants. That lasted about six days leading up to his scheduled press conference, which was originally postponed due to Correa’s physical. Didn’t seem like a big deal until Mets owner Steve Cohen swooped in to talk to agent Scott Boras.
This all happened in the middle of the night, with Cohen sipping a Mai Tai in Hawaii while Boras and Correa were in San Fransisco. Just like that, Correa’s time with the Giants was over and he signed with the Mets, lighting fire among the Giants fanbase.
It’s totally valid for fans to be upset, I would be too.
But this is where it gets too far, as Giants fans have been calling for boycotts, new ownership and a new front office.
Ah yes, “Sell the Team” chants for a team with a $162 million dollar payroll in 2022. A team that threw more than $300 million at one player and has a track record of going after the top free agents. How can you say that with seriousness?
Being an A’s fan is hard, but nothing pissed me off more than seeing Giants fans comparing their struggles.
“Chose to operate like the A’s.” Are you serious? The A’s largest contract in history is Eric Chavez’s $66 million deal back in 2004. The Giants gave Correa $350 million, but sure, they’re just like the $50 million payroll A’s, cry me a river.
The A’s haven’t been to the World Series since 1990, meanwhile, the Giants have won three in the past 12 years. They also have a beautiful stadium that sells out almost every night, but go ahead and call that, “operating like the A’s.”
It gets even worse. The Radio station KNBR in San Fransisco asked Giants fans to speak their minds after the Correa news. The responses are just hilarious listening to this fanbase cry and crumble.
“Worst front office in the league,” and “I’m going to be a Dodger fan,” are two of my favorites. They’re crying, throwing phones and threatening to boycott. Meanwhile, I’m playing my tiny violin over their tears.
Grow up, Giants fans. Your team won over 100 games back in 2021 and has a long track record of success in the postseason. Three championships in the past 12 years, high payroll, legends such as Barry Bonds and Willie Mays and an amazing stadium. Guess that’s not good enough for them just because they lost out on one free agent.
No one feels sorry for you, and comparing your situation to a team like the A’s is just comedy. A’s fans would gladly trade places with you, as would several other fanbases. You don’t have the worst owner or front office, and your boycott tantrums are straight up stupid.
