Ryan Pepiot: Will The Dodgers regret Trading Him?

What if I told you that the Dodgers somehow made a riskier investment this offseason than when they dropped $700 million on Shohei Ohtani? As crazy as it sounds, it very well might be true. Are we sure this Tyler Glasnow trade was a good idea? Are we sure the Dodgers didn’t make a catastrophic mistake giving away Ryan Pepiot?

This just feels like a trade the Rays will end up winning, doesn’t it? They have a pretty good reputation for winning trades exactly like this. To acquire an arm like Pepiot for an expensive one-year contract of Glasnow feels like a win for Tampa. Pepiot won’t even hit arbitration until 2026.

Glasnow has since been extended, but I have a hard time believing this contract is a good idea. Glasnow is terrific but he’s never healthy. He’s not an innings eater either. We’re talking about a guy that has pitched eight years at the MLB level and has never thrown more than 120 innings. Those 120 innings came last year and is about to hit his age 30 season.

We’re sure giving away Pepiot for that is a good idea? I’m not saying Pepiot should be viewed as untouchable, but he shouldn’t exactly be seen as a throw-in either. That’s a pretty solid piece to give up in any trade. Especially for an expiring contract on a player that isn’t exactly durable.

Pepiot, 26, sported a 2.14 ERA across 42 innings in his second MLB Season. The only real concern is whether his three-pitch mix of a fastball, changeup, and slider is enough to establish himself as a 30 start guy every season. Clearly, the Rays think so and they deserve the benefit of the doubt on these type of things.

We’re sure this was a good idea by the Dodgers? I’m not positive of that and I don’t know how you can be.
