Bad news strikes the Mets even in the offseason. Young stud infielder Ronny Mauricio has torn his ACL and will likely miss the upcoming 2024 MLB Season. Mauricio injured his knee while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
Andy Martino of SNY was the first to report the news:
Mauricio, 22, slashed 248/.296/.347 during a 26-game sample size with the big league club last year. He was expected to be a big part of the club for the upcoming season. The Mets deployed Mauricio at second base, third base, and left field during his debut season.
Martino also added that this injury affects what the Mets do in free agency. He mentions Justin Turner as a possible third base / DH fit. We’ll see if that comes to fruition. The Mets also have internal options they can lean on more heavily. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos are other young players that need at-bats at the big-league level.
The best case scenario here is that maybe Mauricio returns late in the season. Still, this is not something the Mets should rush. Especially with a highly touted prospect that is part of the long term future of the organization. Maybe he can return late in the year but this injury is going to sideline him for most of if not the entire 2024 MLB campaign.
Cheers to a speedy recovery for Mauricio. Terrible news. What’s crazy is an offseason injury struck the Mets last year too with Edwin Diaz.
