Ronald Acuña, Jr. Pounding Brewskis, not Baseballs

Ronald Acuña, Jr., who’s quickly made a name for himself as one of the future stars in this league, might have just had the worst game of his profession. And it’s leading me to believe he was intoxicated in some way while on the field.

And it wasn’t just the fact that he played a bad game. It was more how confused he looked at times, and the collection of mental mistakes he made. I’m not even gonna go into the fact he was 0-4 with 3 strikeouts. Although that doesn’t do much to help his case, especially with how good he had played up to this point.

The first example of this is in the 3rd inning, in which J.T. Realmuto hit an inside-the-park hr. (The first time a catcher had done that in postseason history by the way.) During the play, CF Michael Harris attempted to make a catch while running into the wall. However, he failed to make the catch and the ball rolled endlessly into right field. Despite this and the importance of the game, Ronald Acuña was nowhere to be found as backup on the play, which allowed Realmuto to easily score. Had Acuña done his job and not been snoozing on the play, it’s likely Realmuto would have only had a double/maybe triple. But Acuña didn’t seem to realize this and was content staying in RF.

The next mishap for Acuna came in the 6th inning. Rhys Hoskins blooped a ball into right field, which prompted what looked like a play at the plate. However, Acuña in his apparent drunken state was unable to field it cleanly, and bobbled it a few times before seemingly losing the ball. This botched play allowed Jean Segura to score with no contest, and extended the Phillies lead to 3.

There was also one more play in which Acuña was running in on a ball, that he looked like he was gonna catch but for whatever reason, gave up on it and let it drop. This allowed the Phillies to get runners on 1st and 2nd with fewer than two outs. And while I can’t find a video of said play, anyone who was watching the game could see just how lost Acuña was on that play.

Now listen. The Braves lost this series, but Acuña was far from the reason. In fact, Acuña was probably their best player up until this game. But his horrid performance had many people, like myself, wondering what the hell was wrong with him. Did he actually drink? I very much doubt it, but his performance and the way he carried himself would lead you to believe it.
