RJ Barrett had a forgettable rookie season. As the 3rd pick in the 2019 draft, he underwhelmed with a lot of opportunity on the Knicks. Of course, hindsight being 2020 (punny), there’s a lot of rookies the Knicks could have drafted that might have been better. I mean he tied for 3rd with all 2019 rookies with undrafted rookie in 2018 Kendrick Nunn for PPG but with a shitty 39.4% shooting. 7th for APG behind names like Jordan McLaughlin and Ky Bowman. He also was 5th for rookies in rebounding. The only problem is that he was 2nd in minutes, behind De’Andre Hunter.
He’s actually shooting worse this year than he was last year. At the moment, he’s playing 7 more minutes, but only averaging 1.7 more PPG than last year. He’s shooting at 36.5% and a woeful 18% from 3s YIKES. Let me simplify this. The only reason why he has more points is because he’s shooting more. At this rate, RJ Barrett is going to look more and more like a bust until he figures it out. Or should I say IF he figures it out.
I’m contradicting myself a bit here, people call Wiggins a bust, he’s not. He just had no reason being the 1st pick. I consider a bust like Anthony Bennett, he just never panned out and is not in the league. That’s the same with RJ Barrett, RJ will play in the league for a long time, but he won’t ever reach the potential of the 3rd overall pick. At least it doesn’t look that way right now. He’s still only 20 years old and has a while to figure it out, but how hopeful are you right now about that?
