If we’ve learned anything this off-season, it’s that you can go home again. First, it was Scott Frost returning to UCF, and ESPN.com is reporting that Rich Rodriguez will be returning to West Virginia to take over as the Head Coach. Rodriguez spent seven seasons as the Head Coach of the Mountaineers (2001-07), where he went 60-26, 34-14 in conference, including three straight ten-win seasons. The height of his career at West Virginia came in 2006 when the Mountaineers won the Sugar Bowl over Georgia. He would leave for Michigan in 2007 after an ugly divorce.
When talking about his decision and return to West Virginia in his official statement, Rich Rodriguez had this to say:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be the head football coach at West Virginia University,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “My family and I are filled with gratitude to lead the Mountaineer football program again and look forward to working with the many supporters, fans, and friends to build the best football program in America! Take Me Home!”
Rich Rodriguez had done a very good job at Jacksonville State, leading them to back-to-back 9-4 seasons including a Conference USA championship this season. He will be taking over a new program entirely from where it was before, as West Virginia is now in the Big 12 since 2012, where they have had just one ten-win season. The Mountaineers have not been ranked nationally since 2018. This move could have a huge impact on their recruiting, as the reunion tour could prove to be very fruitful after his career revival at Jacksonville State.
