This is something way out of my comfort zone and something I’ve never done at Vendetta Sports Media. Even though I know Trey would be fine with me doing a post like this, I still ran it by the Don because I respect him enough that I would never do something that would make others look poorly on him or the company. With that being said, these are my opinions and mine alone.
The older I get, the more I realize how much at stake I have with each passing year. I have two children, I pay taxes, groceries cost a lot, gas costs a lot, and above all, I am just trying to raise my family and be the best person I can be. I’ve sat through my 20s observing as much as I could going on in the world and understanding my place not just in the now, but in the context of the history of everyone that has come before me and the untold generations that will follow. With all that I have observed and my increased feelings of what I have to lose, I can no longer sit in silence about the political system in our country. The more I see, the angrier I get at both political parties, and I have concluded that both the Republican and Democratic parties suck and that something has to change.
How far can a political party fall? The party that pushed for the end of slavery and the preservation of the Union, the party of Abraham Lincoln, seems to have forgotten most of its roots. Time and time again over the past 140 years, Republicans have been handed power yet have been incompetent in trying to hold it. The amount of infighting that occurs when one candidate tries to show some human decency splits the party and allows their rivals to take over. Republican leadership (like that of their opposite half) is a blueprint for political malpractice.
The Gilded Age is the brightest blot on the history of the Republicans. While the Democrats were no shining light during this time either, it was the Republican party that held the power and did little to nothing to help the American people. Even when Republics did something good, it was by accident. Arguably the second-best Republican president behind Lincoln, (because he is also on Mount Rushmore) is Theodore Roosevelt. He was far from the Republican’s choice for President because of his progressive policies as governor of New York. He was given the role of Vice President under William McKinley so his political career could die, but after McKinley’s assassination, Roosevelt became President and remains to this day one of the most popular all time.
Herbert Hoover exacerbated the same willingness to be passive during domestic crises in the Great Depression, a fumble the Republicans have never recovered by losing mass amounts of voters to the Democrats because of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. The same can be said for most of the recent Republican Presidents during recent economic crises. Sure, Reagan took a tough stance against Communism and the USSR, but a lot of economic policies passed under his watch laid the groundwork for much of the modern corporate greed and Wall Street taking advantage of the economy that set up the 2008 crash and our modern recession. Trump spent more money than any President in history, even before much of the government aid during Covid went out.
The Democratic party feels like a collection of some of the largest crooks in American history. Deep corruption throughout their political history makes it hard to see them as a party that fights for the people. Democrats are quick to claim FDR and Kennedy among their ranks, but seem keen to ignore FDR putting Japanese-Americans in internment camps and that Kennedy’s support for the Civil Rights movement was an outlier compared to the vast majority of the southern supporters of the party.
When Republicans lose an election, they always threaten to secede (something Democrats have already done in the past), but when Democrats lose, they say the system is unfair and vow to change the entire system. Democrats threaten to do away with the Electoral College and pack the Supreme Court to put in justices who will vote their way. Yes, Republicans are crybabies too, but Democrats are the loudest when they don’t get their way, lashing out like a spoiled child whose parent told them they couldn’t get a toy at the store and roll around on the floor screaming in protest.
I fully believe that if every problem in America was fixed tonight, then the Democratic party would not exist by morning. Every election is “Vote or Die” because the Republicans wish to reenslave minorities and impose a fascist state. Democrats need a boogeyman to survive. For decades, Democrats preached the need to have Democrat Presidents because if enough Supreme Court Justices died or retired during a Republican Presidency, then the new Justices would overturn Roe v Wade. Yes, this did happen, and now Democrats are vowing to sign abortion into law. My only question is, could they not have previously done this? Numerous times the Democratic party held the House, Senate, Presidency, and a Supreme Court that upheld Roe v Wade. So why not pass a federal bill preserving such a topic so closely tied to the Democratic platform? Without a boogeyman, how else would people be convinced to vote for a Democrat?
The worst part about both parties is how pretentious and out of touch they are. I believe that the elites of both parties have their heads so far up their butts, that they are fully aware that they do but enjoy it because they can only hear themselves talk and no one else. Each party thinks so highly of themselves that it feels that each person with some form of power has a Messiah complex. Nancy Pelosi suggested that Biden belongs on Mt. Rushmore. Are we serious? What has Biden done as President that he deserves to be considered a top 4 or 5 President?
The Republican and Democratic parties have no problem lying, stealing, or cheating the American people. Trillions of dollars are spent now each year with what feels like very little positive impact on the American people. Our government will gladly send billions to Ukraine and Israel and forgive the debt incurred by businesses during the Pandemic, but refuse to help students who are in massive amounts of debt because of lies sold to them? Average Americans can’t afford a home or groceries, yet we are demanded to pay our fair share through taxes that, outside of national defense I guess, do not benefit most Americans. Both parties operate with insider knowledge of the stock market and pocket millions while in office but allow trading to stop when GameStop’s value goes up so much that Wall Street loses billions so that ordinary people can’t cash in.
As of writing this article, the US economy has lost around $1.3 trillion in a single day. The worst part of yet another impending recession is that whenever the economy is good, average Americans hardly benefit, yet they will have to bear the brunt of the negatives. But people like Warren Buffett can use his connections in Congress to see that a crash is coming and sell most of his assets for profit before losing millions. Regular people can’t do that, so people’s 401ks took massive hits today.
It’s not just the political elite that annoys me, but those who have dedicated their lives to support their party no matter what and ask no questions. Each side has people who refuse to listen to reason and blindly follow whoever it is their party puts in front of them. Some Trump supporters believe he is the “Chosen One” and was hand-picked by God Himself to lead America, whereas people on the left believe that he is literally Hitler (even though he was elected and defeated through our democratic systems). Not everyone on the left is a communist who wants to confiscate all guns and persecute Christians, and not everyone on the right is a fascist, racist, homophobic bigot wanting to reintroduce Jim Crow.
It’s hard to try and support either side when the loudest part of each party’s voter base seems to be full of babies that act out when they don’t get their way or spout ridiculous nonsense about the other side that any sane person should not believe. Neither side is even interested in listening to the other. Not every immigrant is trying to steal jobs, assault women and commit crimes, but to say that we should have open borders and allow anyone and everyone in without at least some sort of check is ridiculous in the opposite.
What’s worse is that Republican and Democrat elites love to feed into these camps. They know these are the people who will throw endless amounts of money and multiple campaigns to make sure that the other side doesn’t win. Politicians will continue to take advantage of this group and will actively look to expand these radical groups because that is how these parties can survive. If more people took the time to be informed and not buy into the hysteria or the “us vs them” mentality, both parties would follow the Whig party and dissolve.
This election has been a mess and one for the history books. We again started with a rematch between two candidates who were born before 1950 in Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Biden decided to drop out from the race because it is clear that he is not fit to run (but he is to still be President?) and now his VP Kamala Harris will take on Trump. I honestly do not care much for either of these candidates. Sure they both have some ideas I can get with, but the whole package is just so spoiled it’s hard to choose. It’s like buying a package of meat where most of the package is rotten. You’ll most likely have some good pieces in there, but you’re wasting a lot and there’s a chance you might get sick whichever one you eat.
It’s the same story every election. No one really likes the candidate, wishes for someone better, says we need a third party, and end up voting for whatever party they’ve always voted for because they’re scared of the other side winning. It’s going to take a collective effort to try and fix this country. I wish we had another party that operated on common sense rather than greed. I wish everyone in America could read this and tomorrow we all agree to stop the madness. But alas, I doubt that happens. However, I will not lose heart, and neither should you. We need to work towards common-sense solutions to our problems. Solutions that support the growth of the middle class, support the average American citizen, and fairness and transparency in everything. Let us hope we can do this soon.
