In Sunday’s blowout 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a potentially season-ending PCL injury, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. There has yet to be an official prognosis, which likely won’t come until Monday after his MRI.
McCaffrey went down midway through the second quarter, giving himself up on the play after receiving a toss. Here is a slo-mo replay of the injury.
He finished with just seven carries for 53 yards on the night. Running back Jordan Mason came in and logged 13 carries for 78 yards, while backup Isaac Guerendo had four carries for 19 yards and the team’s only touchdown on the night.
It’s been a grim season for the 28-year-old running back who missed all but three of the team’s first 11 games with Achilles tendinitis. Entering Sunday night’s game, he logged just 56 total touches for 289 yards without a touchdown after leading the NFL in rushing last year. Fortunately enough for him, he signed a two-year, $38 million extension this offseason with a $24 million signing bonus.
The Niners have dealt with injuries all season to Brandon Aiyuk, Talanoa Hufanga, Javon Hargrave, Dre Greenlaw, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa and Deommodore Lenoir, among others. It’s been a season from H-E-double hockey sticks for them, now dropping to 5-7 and two games out of the picture for the division title.
Mason is as good of a backup as they come, but it will still be a huge blow if McCaffrey misses the rest of the season.
