The Washington Redskins made a splash! Landon Collins will stick in the NFC East but will head south to D.C. The Giants did not franchise Collins this offseason and I’m sure he’s glad they didn’t. The Skins and Collins have agreed to a 6-year deal worth $84 million.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network had the details:
The $45 million guaranteed number is shocking. $14 million per year is also the most ever for a safety. That’s a ton of money for a safety that can’t really cover. Although, it’s not that shocking because Bruce Allen is an idiot. Collins graded out as the 39th best safety in the NFL in 2018 according to Pro Football Focus. Again, it’s an astronomically high number for a box safety.
Collins, 25, was a former 2nd round pick out of the University of Alabama in the 2015 NFL Draft. Collins is a two time pro bowl selection but he is more of a box safety. I wonder if Washington will now make a more concerted effort to keep Ha Ha Clinton-Dix as the main cover guy.
The Redskins are a confusing team. They will go with Case Keenum or Colt McCoy as their quarterback next year. They have no chance to win. Collins also really isn’t an upgrade over the safety unit the Skins had last year. D.J. Swearinger and Clinton-Dix both ranked as top 5 safeties in 2018. Both could be gone and Swearinger already is gone.
The Giants will receive a 2020 third round comp pick for the loss of Landon Collins. I’m sure Collins will be fired up for those games against his former team in New York.
