In what’s been a quiet 2025 offseason, the Cincinnati Reds make a move to acquire Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Per Jeff Passan
Once a highly touted prospect coming out of the Dodgers system, Lux never seemed to find his footing. Injuries and a stacked Dodger lineup never allowed the young prospect to develop into the player many scouts thought he could be.
It was another down year for Gavin Lux in 2024, coming off a torn ACL, posting a slash line of .251/.320/.383 in 439 at-bats. The thing is, Lux had started to show flashes of that great player before that ACL tear. Hitting .276 with a .346 OPB and could thrive in a situation like Cincinnati. Certainly, a lot less pressure to perform in that situation.
I think there is still a good ballplayer in Gavin Lux, but I don’t think it was going to happen in LA. As for the Dodgers, I think this is an excellent return. Mike Sirota has looked good in his time at Northeastern, and with the Dodger’s ability to develop talent, who knows how good this kid could end up.
Now, this move may come as a surprise to some, given LA’s General Manager Brandon Gomes downplaying the possibility of a Gavin Lux trade just a week ago. But a nice prospect and a decent pick were enough for the Dodgers to cut ties with the once highly touted prospect, and I can’t say I blame them.
The Reds also have a pretty crowded infield, so Gavin Lux will continue to have to earn his playing time. But a change of scenery could also be just what the 27-year-old needs to turn things around.
