The Indianapolis Colts finished the season 8-9 which placed them second in the AFC South. This season was a disappointing year for a franchise that was hoping to get back into the playoffs. Now, the Colts playoff drought has extended to four years which is their longest drought since 1995. Head coach Shane Steichen appeared to identify the Colts’ defense as a big reason for their lack of success. Now, the Colts have parted ways with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.
The Colts were a bottom-tier defense according to a lot of different statistics. Indianapolis was the fourth-worst team in yards per game giving up 361 and ninth-worst in points per game at 25.1. Also, the team only had one defensive Pro Bowl selection in linebacker Zaire Franklin.
Gus Bradley did not live up to expectations as the Colts played so poorly on defense this year. Furthermore, the AFC South was maybe the weakest division in football. The Houston Texans were the division winner with the weakest record, Jacksonville now has the fifth pick, and Tennessee finished as the worst team in the NFL. Ultimately, the Colts could not get it figured out and their struggles on both sides of the ball led to a failed season. This was Bradley’s third year as the defensive coordinator in the middle of a four-year playoff drought so the change at DC makes sense.
Gus Bradley made a name for himself in the NFL as the defensive coordinator of the Legion of Boom Seattle Seahawks teams. Although, with the talent on those rosters that was probably not the hardest job. Next, he got the head coaching job at Jacksonville but he was unable to have a winning season with the Jaguars.
Bradley would bounce around as defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders before landing with the Indianapolis Colts. The decision for the Colts to part ways with Bradley seems like it might be best for both parties. It will be interesting to see if Gus Bradley will be hired as a defensive coordinator somewhere else or as a position coach.
