The Red Sox are on the free agency board again. The problem is they signed a player with the last name Sandoval, which will certainly give the fan base PTSD thinking about the fat slob Panda who played an awful third base, once upon a time. Nevertheless, Boston is signing lefty starter Patrick Sandoval to a two year contract.
Jeff Passan over at ESPN was the first to report the news:
Sandoval, 28, was pretty brutal in 2024 prior to getting hurt. Last season, Sandoval registered 16 starts compiling a 5.08 ERA in a little over 79 innings. His best season was back in 2022 where he posted a 2.91 ERA in 27 starts. Maybe a change of scenery back in the Andrew Bailey pitching lab. Bailey actually was hired by the Angels in 2019 so the two should have a working relationship already. Maybe Bailey advocated for him.
The last time the Red Sox signed a player with the last name Sandoval, it couldn’t have turned out worse. Here’s hoping this is a Sandoval that Boston can actually rally behind.
This is the part fans should really know. Sandoval is coming off TJ surgery and will miss a vast majority of the 2025 MLB Season. This move is all about 2026 and maybe a stretch postseason run in 2025. This will allow Boston to rehab the pitcher and place him on the 60-Day IL so that he’s not taking up a spot on the 40-man roster. That’s the only upside of this move. If Sandoval rebounds, he’s on a nice little price tag for 2026. It’s a move Chaim Bloom would make so I’m not sure how excited fans should really be here.
