Maalik Murphy is on the move again. The 6-foot-5 mobile quarterback started out his collegiate career at Texas. Then spent this past season at Duke. A successful season, by the way, which included leading the Blue Devils to a 9-3 mark under Manny Diaz. Now Murphy is on the move again.
On3 (I’m going to say it again but it blows my mind every time. The marketing behind that company absolutely sucks. WTF is an On3? Does anybody know?) was the first to report the news:
“Duke quarterback transfer Maalik Murphy has committed to Oregon State, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed. Murphy was a surprise entrance into the NCAA transfer portal, leaving Durham after just one season after starting his career with Texas.”
Manny Diaz also gave a political answer regarding Murphy’s decision to bolt.
“I’ve got a ton of respect for Maalik Murphy,” Diaz said on Murphy’s transfer. “Our story as a program, it doesn’t happen this way without Maalik. He’s been everything we could have hoped for and more in his time with us. I’m excited for him and his future and I’m glad we were part of each other’s story.”
This feels like a very strange move to me. Oregon State took a step back under Trent Bray in his first year and is a defensive minded head coach. Murphy, a four star prospect during the 2022 cycle, will be a guaranteed starter. Beyond that, I’m not quite sure why Oregon State. He had interest from other bigger schools like Miami.
By the way, Duke has already replaced Murphy. Former Tulane starter Darian Mensah will be the starter for the Blue Devils in 2025.
