Real Madrid Legend Kroos To Retire After Euro 2024

Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Toni Kroos announced his plan to retire from soccer on Tuesday following his involvement with the German National Team during this summer’s European Championship.

The 34-year-old Real Madrid legend won a staggering 22 trophies with the club, including four Champions Leagues and four La Liga Titles. He also won a Champions League and three Bundesliga titles with boyhood club Bayern Munich and was part of the German squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end,” Kroos said. “I would particularly like to thank everyone that welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me. But especially I would like to thank you, dear Madridistas, for your affection and your love from the first day until the last one.

“At the same time this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the European Championship. As I have always said: Real Madrid is and will be my last club. I am happy and proud, that in my mind I found the right timing for my decision and that I could choose it by my own. My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level.”

After moving to Real Madrid from Bayern in 2014, Kroos became a key part of the club’s midfield alongside Luka Modrić and Casemiro. He was known for his composure and quality on the ball, as shown by his 94% pass completion rate in all games he appeared in for Real Madrid.

“Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and affection to Toni Kroos, a player who is already part of the history of Real Madrid and who is one of the great legends of our club and world football,” the club said in a statement. “Toni Kroos will forever remain in the hearts of all Madrid fans for the excellence of his football and for being a player who has given everything for this shirt, always representing the values of Real Madrid.”

Kroos will finish his career with Germany as they look to win the 2024 Euros on home soil despite underachieving in recent years. The hosts open up the tournament with a matchup against Scotland on June 14 and will also face Hungary and Switzerland in Group A.
