Steve Smith is officially retired from the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens are trying to convince him to return for the 2017 season. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti gave us some insight on his attempts to lure Smith back to Baltimore.
“I haven’t given up hope that Steve Smith is going to come walking in here in September,” Bisciotti said, via ESPN. “We’ll see about that character. I wouldn’t count him out.”
Smith, 38, was the oldest receiver in the NFL last season but still had a fairly productive season. In 2016 Smith recorded 70 catches for 799 yards. His 11.4 yards per catch was a career low this year but he was still Baltimore’s most productive receiver.
If Steve Smith does decide to change his mind about retirement he would be scheduled to become a free agent in March. It sounds like the Ravens would be willing to write him a nice check for a return to Baltimore next season. If Smith does remain retired, the Ravens will be in need of a receiver.
