The Ravens love doing their best Godfather three impression. Just when you think you’re out, they do their best to pull me back in. I won’t stand for it while Lamar Jackson is on the roster but boy, oh boy, did I just perk up today. The Ravens pulled off a massive trade acquiring Bears linebacker Roquan Smith.
In return for the superstar linebacker, Chicago will receive a second and fifth-round pick. Not sure it’s the best return for a player Chicago picked 7th overall in 2018 while in the prime of his career at 25 years of age. However, it can very well be argued that the Bears are in total rebuild mode and are already behind the 8-ball in terms of acquiring young talent because of the Justin Fields trade.
Smith leads the NFL in tackles and trails just Bobby Wagner in that category over the last five years. Smith is a star talent and someone we were high on during the draft process. It’s no surprise to see the former Georgia linebacker kill it at the NFL level. He’s a total stud and now Patrick Queen gets to become the secondary linebacker. Huge win for the Ravens.
Smith is a free agent after this season and you would hope Baltimore is smart enough to have a next contract lined up with him already. If not, losing Smith in free agency would be an all-time blunder. Keep in mind, Baltimore also won’t franchise Smith given the fact that Lamar Jackson will already occupy the tag. For the sake of Ravens fans, let’s hope a contract is already agreed upon or else I don’t really know what else to say.
