After a breakout 2023 season, the Ravens are backing the Brinks truck up for Justin Madubuike, signing him to a four-year deal worth $98 million, with $53.5 million guaranteed to him upon signing. Adam Schefter was the first to break the news yesterday.
As Schefter points out, the most shocking part of this deal is probably the amount of money given to Madubuike directly up front. We are seeing more guaranteed contracts today, but most of those don’t have the money paid upfront—or at least that much.
But when looking at Madubuike and this Ravens team last year, It’s easy to see why Baltimore didn’t waste any time securing him to a long-term contract.
Ever since being taken in the third round of the 2020 draft, Madubuike’s potential was clear. The makings for an elite interior rusher were there, but Justin was just never able to fully put it together.
Boy, oh boy, did Madubuike take that step in 2023. He racked up a career-high 13 sacks and 33 total QB hits. Both crushing the previous highs he had in both stats.
Truthfully, though, this breakout shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Sure, Madubuike wasn’t even a pro bowler last year. But when you watched him play, it was clear that a star was in the making.
The sheer size and athleticism were just waiting to be paired with elite technique. The Ravens are known for finding and developing their pass rushers. It seems like they once again found another gem.
But outside of the pass rushing, he also is hugely valuable in stopping the run. Like most defensive tackles are. He really is just a huge part of this Ravens defense and should wreak havoc in the AFC for years to come.
The Ravens know how valuable a guy like Justin Madubuike is. Guys like him don’t even come around every draft year. Even with minimal cap space, Madubuike was clearly a priority in the Baltimore front office. Can’t really say I blame them.
