Ravens Sign Jadeveon Clowney
The Ravens are beefing up their pass rushing unit prior to the start of the 2023-24 NFL Season. Former number one overall pick during the 2014 NFL Draft, Jadeveon Clowney, is signing a one year contract with Baltimore. Clowney visited Baltimore and Jacksonville last week and finally settled on a deal with the Ravens.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Let’s take a peek behind the curtain here. Baltimore clearly doesn’t feel 100% confident in the pass rushers on the roster. Nor should they. This oddly wasn’t mentioned in the training camp breakdown by former slapdick writer, Logan.
Last year, Justin Houston was pretty good for Baltimore racking up 9.5 sacks. Houston is obviously at an advanced age but now he’s gone after signing a free agent contract with Carolina. Clowney figures to be the veteran presence to replace him.
It’s a lot of unproven talent on the edge in Baltimore. The depth chart consists of Odafe Oweh, David Ojabo, Tyus Bowser, and Tavius Robinson. Young players with potential but no consistent track record that you can really count on. Bowser may be the closest thing the Ravens have to that.
Clowney, 30, had just two sacks for Cleveland in 12 games for the Browns a year ago. Not exactly an ideal number when Myles Garrett is on the opposite side. Still, Clowney is better against the run than he gets credit for and talent has never really been the issue as evidenced by his draft positioning. More important than anything might be whether or not John Harbaugh can keep the guy motivated.
