Ranking George Washington University Nickname Change Options

Citing community division, George Washington University will retire the “Colonials” nickname for their athletic teams ahead of the 2023-24 academic year.

[Note: It’s probably worth noting the difference between ‘colonials’ and ‘colonizers.’ The former refers to those in the American colonies that fought the Revolutionary War against British colonization in support of democracy. They were actually in direct opposition to colonialism, but I digress.]

For better or worse, George Washington is changing their nickname. They have rolled out a plan, “Moniker Madness,” to select the best choice. I have gone ahead and ranked the 10 options GWU has put out for review.

10. Squad

Really just not that good. George Washington, The Squad would be funny though. If you know you know.

9. Truth

This sounds like a WNBA franchise nickname. New York Liberty, George Washington Truth – same vibe.

8. Catalysts

‘Catalyst’ is a cool word, but it doesn’t work very well as a team name.

7. Fireworks

Very American, which makes sense. In my opinion, it doesn’t flow very well with the name of the school. More of a minor league baseball name, to be honest.

6. Monumentals

The Monuments would have been far better. I’m generally not a fan of using adjectives as a team name. The George Washington Monuments isn’t that bad. The George Washington Monumentals is that bad. Maybe the George Washington Washington Monuments is in play.

5. Independents

Meh.

4. Ambassadors

Pretty basic.

3. Revolutionaries

I think it’s definitely a step up from Colonials, and it fits well with the name of the school. Sort of a lateral move, just clarifying the original name. I wouldn’t mind this one.

2. Sentinels

This one is cool. It’s also unique, and that’s key. Opens the door for an awesome logo design.

1. Blue Fog

As discussed on Jimmer Range Episode 42, Blue Fog is far and away the best. Hopefully the George Washington University community agrees. The George Washington Blue Fog? Sign me up. The updated logo and branding would be sick.
