Another season and yet another year in which Jacob deGrom will miss significant time with an injury. DeGrom is one of the best pitchers on the planet when healthy but is seemingly unable to stay so. The Rangers were hoping this year would be different, even signing him to a five-year contract before this season.
Everything looked good to start with deGrom going 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA and 45 strikeouts. It was looking like a typical year of deGrom excellence, but then, in routine fashion, injury struck. Inflammation in his elbow saw him hit the IL back on April 29.
He has remained on the Injured List ever since and will now have to at least wait 60 days before returning. Spencer Howard will be activated off the 60-day IL list to take deGrom’s spot.
Unfortunately, this is starting to become a pattern for the 34-year-old. In 2021, he dealt with forearm tightness and missed the season from July onward. Then, in 2022, he missed the first half of the season with a shoulder issue, returning in August.
Nobody denies that he’s one of the best pitchers in the game when he’s healthy and on his game. But even dating back to his days in New York, he has just never been able to stay healthy.
Maybe it’s the tradeoff for how nasty his stuff is, or maybe he is just one of those players who is cursed. The decision to pay deGrom long-term was certainly a risky one and the Rangers are seeing firsthand those very risks play out.
Thankfully for the Rangers, it doesn’t seem to be affecting their overall play. The Rangers are currently 38-20 and have been one of the hottest teams in the league recently. They currently sit 3.5 games ahead of the defending champion Houston Astros, who have been right on their tail of late.
Texas is looking like they will be making a serious playoff push and could really use an arm like deGrom. June 28 would be the earliest he can come back barring any major setbacks.
Hopefully, he can be back sooner rather than later because I personally love getting to watch him pitch. It’s a true shame he’s been as injured as he has been over the course of his career, because he truly is exciting to watch when he’s on the mound. Let’s just hope deGrom doesn’t make Ranger fans regret this contract.
