Everything is somehow falling into place for the New York Rangers. They’re still a hot mess but maybe a little crazy is exactly what they need to turn things around and make a true Stanley Cup run. Speaking of crazy… JT Miller is making his return to Madison Square Garden.
Frank Seravalli over at Daily Faceoff was the first to report the news. Larry Brooks over at the New York Post was the first to drop the full details.
Miller, 31, is a true game driving center the Rangers have been craving. The Ohio native has 35 points in 40 games this season and is coming off a 103 point season the year prior. To go Miller, Vincent Trocheck, and now Mika Zibanejad as your third line center… that’s not a bad trio to go down the center of the ice with.
Chris Drury deserves some credit here. In the aggregate, the Rangers are definitely better. New York dumped Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko to gain cap space. They take Miller’s full contract on, which is a big reason this trade got done. They really didn’t give up a ton here either. Filip Chytil has potential but has been plagued by head injuries in the past. Victor Mancini wasn’t cracking the lineup on a regular basis as is. The Rangers truly didn’t give up a ton here beyond the protected first rounder, which is protected top 13.
It will be curious to see what Paul Bissonnette over at Spittin Chiclets thinks about this trade. Especially given the fact that the Canucks owner apparently consulted him about potentially making a Miller trade. Based on what Biz said on the last podcast when he revealed this news, he likely won’t approve of the package the Canucks got back.
