2020 has been a weird year. If I told you that Raheem Mostert would request a trade last year, you would have said who? Well, that’s where we are right now. Mostert was heading into 2020 as a player I’m super high on. Now, his future seems up in the air. Mostert has requested a trade away from the 49ers.
Mostert’s agency put the Tweet out:
It would appear that the biggest problem here is the fact that Mostert is underpaid and San Francisco hasn’t put a great offer on the table. In fairness to San Fran, they don’t have to. Before the start of last season, Mostert inked an extension worth $8.7 million over the next 3 years. Mostert signed the deal thinking he was a special teams player. That obviously has changed.
Mostert did lead the NFL in yards per carry. His agent is right about that. You can also see why San Fran doesn’t want to budge too much here. However, you can see why Mostert is frustrated as well. It’s a tough line here. I’m curious which is more likely. A trade or the team decides to rework the contract?
I get why Mostert wants a new contract but this is playing a dangerous game. The dumbest thing in the world would be to leave Kyle Shanahan. Just ask Devonta Freeman what that’s like. If Mostert is smart, he’s just bluffing for a new contract. If he’s traded, his career could be very much over. I’m almost leaning towards no trade cause I can’t see a contender giving up a high pick for a player with 8 good games of production.
