In a statement the Buckingham Palace said the following:
The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. – According to bbc.com
Queen Elizabeth II first came into power in 1952, and witnessed quite a lot during her time as the UK’s longest serving Monarch. With her death, her oldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will become king and lead the country as they mourn the great loss. The new king put out a statement following his mother’s passing:
The death of my beloved mother Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. Statement details from bbc.com
Queen Elizabeth II’s reign saw 15 different prime ministers which began with Winston Churchill, who was born in 1874, and included Liz Truss who was born over 100 years later, 101 to be exact, and was appointed by the queen earlier this week.
The queen’s time in power included the severe post-war period, the transition from the empire to the Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, and the UK’s entry, then later exit, of the European Union.
I send my prayers and condolences to the Royal Family through this tragic time of loss and mourning.
