Vendetta Sports Media is starting a new series of blogs that will go up every day. We will be covering historic events that happened on each day of the calendar month. A variety of bloggers will take part in this so it won’t be just me every day. I’ll start mine off with a very important day. A day that changed the course of history forever. On this date – April 2nd, 1453: Mehmed II began the Siege of Constantinople.
Of course, it’s not called Constantinople anymore. After the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople, it was renamed Istanbul where it still stands today. The Siege began on April 2nd and the battles lasted through May 29th when Mehmed II officially declared victory. If Mehmed II failed, who knows. Maybe the city is still referred to as Constantinople. Instead, it’s Istanbul and the modern day capital of Turkey.
Best news of all, it’s on Netflix. It’s only 6 episodes long too so it doesn’t take forever to finish:
I recommend watching it. I’m a history junkie but I think it’s a really good watch. I won’t give too much of it away but you kind of already know the outcome by the title. Rise of Empires sooo.
I’ll give my favorite line from the show. Mehmed II is trying to form a plan of attack but he’s trying to keep it a secret. He tells somebody something along the lines of “If a hair on my beard knew what I was doing, I would pluck it”. Totally stealing that line. If you need something to watch, I recommend it and you can learn about the takeover of Constantinople and how it became Istanbul.
