Dave Meltzer currently finds himself in some hot waters. Meltzer is a veteran in the professional wrestling journalism business. He started his journalism journey in the 1980’s and has been doing it ever since. Furthermore, he started one of the most popular professional wrestling journalism company’s in Wrestling Observer Newsletter. But as of late, there have been some reports that came out claiming he has been publishing false stories.
Dave Meltzer has reportedly been publishing false stories. Last week, a podcast that covers Japan’s Dragongate wrestling promotion, published debunking’s of a story that Meltzer reportedly had been following since May of 2022. Dave Meltzer had been duped by a hoaxer claiming to be Kaito Ishida, a Dragongate wrestler during the time. Emails from the person pretending to be Ishida, claimed that there was an alleged disruption in Dragongate, this was stemming from Nosawa Rongai reportedly becoming their new booker, which is also something that was never true.
There were some alleged red flags in this situation. One of them was that reportedly the sender asked the recipient not contact them on social media. Their reasoning was reportedly that the Dragongate office had their login information for their accounts. Another red flag was that the email count reportedly ended in @tokyo.jp, which is a popular spam email address. However, it’s unknown if Dave Meltzer tried to see if the email was authentic or not.
This just goes to show that it’s important to verify your sources and be on the lookout for fakes. Even the people who have been reporting the longest are susceptible to fake’s.
