The Red Sox cheaped out on Teoscar Hernandez last offseason and he laughed in their face after winning a World Series with the Dodgers. Now Boston has another chance to sign him but this time a qualifying offer is attached to him.
Hernandez, 32, is coming off a season where he just hit 33 homers and is an important righty power bat for any lineup. After a strong season in LA, what does his free agency price tag look like this go around?
Mark Feinsand had the following:
“The Dodgers and Hernández seemed headed for a reunion, but the two sides haven’t been able to reach a deal thus far,” Feinsand wrote. “That opened the door for other teams — namely the Red Sox and Blue Jays — to jump in on the outfielder, who is seeking a three-year deal in the $22-24 million a year range, per sources.”
If this is really what it costs, I’m not sure what teams are waiting for. This is a more than reasonable price for what Teoscar provides. Sure, he strikes out more than you would like but $22-24 million per year is more than fair considering the power he brings. Plus, he’s not slow either and ranked fairly high in sprint speed a year ago. For a team like the Red Sox, they need a righty power bat in the worst way possible, especially after losing Tyler O’Neill to the Orioles. They really need to replace that spot in the lineup.
