‘Pokémon GO’ Developer Niantic is Working on a Monster Hunter Game
The idea of having games set in the real world and the viability of such a premise fluctuated with Pokémon GO. The title, a monster of a success back in 2016, has received little news coverage in quite a while. But the recent announcement of GO developer Niantic working on a similar project with Capcom has brought life back to both the game and the concept of a real-world game.
What The Announcement Entails
On April 18, Niantic and Capcom held a joint press conference where they announced Monster Hunter Now. The game will be available for iOS and Android smart phones. The title, set to release sometime in September of this year, will incorporate the same real-world mechanics as GO.
Both Capcom and Niantic have stressed that Monster Hunter Now won’t be a dumb-downing of the popular RPG series. Instead, with the transition into mobile play, the pair of companies wants to make the title accessible for long-time fans and newcomers alike.
The announcement also mentions that a closed beta testing for the game is to be available on April 25, with fans and newcomers being able to sign up for it on the game’s website.
The Differences Between GO And Now
While both Pokémon GO and Monster Hunter Now will be incorporating the real world in their gameplay, the gameplay will be remarkably different from each other, with Now taking inspiration from the series’ RPG elements to deliver a more action-oriented style of play.
In typical Monster Hunter fashion, one to four players will battle monsters, take their parts, then combine them into useful items to then use against other monsters, alongside other mainstays of the series as well as new mechanics. The game is shaping up to be something interesting for sure.
It will be a little while longer before Monster Hunter Now is released, but it seems like the game is in the safe and capable hands of Niantic and Capcom.
