Playing Starters In The Preseason Is Clinically Insane

It will continue to never make sense to me why NFL teams play starters or important players during the preseason. It’s not just insane. It should be a fireable offense. If and when I ever get one of these jobs, it will be a non-negotiable part of the hiring process when finding a head coach.

I’ve told this story before but I just think it fits in terms of describing how dumb it is to play starters during the preseason. I wrestled basically my whole life from the age of six until my first two years of college. In my sophomore year of college, I was suspended from competing for being an idiot. I wasn’t ready or prepared for college at all. I never felt healthier when I came back and kicked everyone’s ass for the first two weeks back.

I can promise you if these guys are talented enough to make the NFL, they didn’t forget how to play football over the offseason. It’s a long season where you play 17 games and hopefully playoffs. Why would you risk your entire season on a game that doesn’t matter? Football is war and it should be treated as such. Why are we endangering our best players in a war that doesn’t matter? It’s brain-dead. I need every single bullet in the chamber for the gruesome season.

I’m not suggesting the guys shouldn’t practice. Have your guys sharp and ready to go for the season. I’m just tired of coaches pretending that this isn’t a sport where guys fall apart. It’s a war of attrition and giving away players in games that don’t count will never make sense.

Bill Belichick Doesn’t Care About The Preseason

I would sit the top 40 guys on my roster during the preseason. Anybody battling for a spot on the team can earn their way on the roster. The fact that anybody views preseason as anything else is maddening. If college football doesn’t have the preseason, then we need to stop preparing that NFL players need it to shake off the rust. I can promise you that if wrestling had a preseason, I’m not showing up. End of story.
