The Pittsburgh Steelers open up their preseason schedule Saturday night against the Seattle Seahawks, and news came out today that Mitch Trubisky will be the starting Quarterback for the preseason opener. This roster has a lot of questions that still need to be answered, and players who still need to show a little something more to make this roster and have a spot going forward. We will be looking at 5 players who need to prove their worth in order to have an impact on the 53-man roster for the regular season.
When the Steelers signed Trubisky to a two-year contract, he was viewed as the short-term answer at the Quarterback position. However, with the team drafting Kenny Pickett in this year’s draft, that spot is up for grabs. Trubisky has looked good throughout camp, and he has a chance to secure the starting job if he shows out early in the preseason. This should be a two-man battle all preseason long, but it appears that the edge right now goes to Trubisky.
For a lot of the reasons listed above, Kenny Pickett also has a ton to prove this preseason. He was drafted in the first round, kicking off an excellent draft class, and is viewed as the long-term solution after Ben Roethlisberger retired after last season. Pickett has had his moments in camp so far, but a great showing throughout the preseason could make the starting QB competition that much closer than before. I believe Trubisky starts the season, but if Pickett balls out, that could be up for debate.
This pick will also stem more into the regular season than the others, but Bush has to start the campaign strong with a good showing in the preseason. The Steelers declined his fifth-year option, which typically means that the team doesn’t have this player in their long-term plans or that a player has not lived up to expectations. After a stellar rookie year and then a devastating knee injury, the pieces just haven’t seemed to fall back into place for the former Michigan Wolverine. This will be a big year for Bush.
The first of two rookies who are showing out for the Pittsburgh Steelers in training camp, Calvin Austin has been making a name for himself. Austin has flashed his speed throughout camp, making great play after great play for the tram and establishing himself as a future guy in this offense. A good showing in the preseason could land him valuable reps in practice and get him more snaps once the NFL regular season gets under away. Austin should do well in Matt Canada’s offense.
The second rookie who has played well in camp is Jaylen Warren. Warren, signed as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State, has looked great so far and making the backup running back spot one to watch. The RB room consists of Najee Harris, Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland, and Jaylen Warren. With Harris getting the bulk of the carries going forward, the backup job is up for anyone, really. Warren has a chance to etch his name into that role with a strong showing in the preseason. He should see his fair share of snaps to earn that chance.
