The Pittsburgh Steelers have recently signed former WFT and Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Although the signing does not bring much risk, as Haskins can be cut at any time, this move is still not an optimal one. Haskins has constantly played poorly, and the Steelers have a history of being unable to develop quarterbacks. For a quarterback that needs to be heavily developed, like Dwayne Haskins, the Steelers are not the place to go. It was a mistake for the Steelers to sign Dwayne Haskins.
Dwayne Haskins is a very physically talented quarterback. Right now he has the best arm on the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also has the best legs since Joshua Dobbs. However, being physically talented does not mean anything in the NFL if you cannot use it. JaMarcus Russell was very physically talented but was still a terrible bust. It is the same with Dwyane Haskins.
The problem with Haskins is that he is not a mentally gifted quarterback. He cannot read defenses, and he constantly makes poor decisions. In fact, he may be worse than Mason Rudolph when it comes to decision making. Even worse is that, like Rudolph, Haskins still takes his time making worse decisions. He is so bad that he lost his job to a man with one leg, and a former XFL backup and made them look excellent. The only advantage that he has over the current Steelers QBs is his physical traits.
However, Dwayne Haskin’s ability is not his only flaw. He has constant attitude issues while in Washington. In the 2020 season, he had his title of captain revoked because of his poor behavior. After a loss, Haskins attended a strip club without a mask during a COVID-ridden season. This is even worse considering that the Football Team was fighting for a playoff spot at the time.
If the Pittsburgh Steelers did not tolerate Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell, Haskins will not make it. If Tomlin had to personally reprimand Juju Smith Schuster and Chase Claypool for their online antics, Tomlin will have to reprimand Haskins. Unless he makes serious changes he will not make it in Pittsburgh. However, until then he is just a distraction in the locker room and another possible disturbance.
Over the last two decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers did not need to develop any quarterbacks. They had Ben Roethlisberger. However, it doesn’t mean they haven’t tried. Pittsburgh has drafted 5 QBs since Ben Roethlisberger. Only two are left in the league, Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs. The closest thing that the Steelers have developed to an NFL starting QB was Jarvis Landry. The last time he played football, he led the XFL in interceptions. Even worse is that he missed half the season due to injury.
Over the last few years, the Steeler’s did not even have a dedicated quarterbacks coach. They hired one in 2020, however, he may become their offensive coordinator in 2021. Plain and simple, the Steelers don’t know how to develop QBs, so how are they expected to develop a disgruntled Dwayne Haskins.
Dwayne Haskins has a lot of upsides. He is cheap, he is desperate and he can be cut easily. However, he is nothing but a long shot. The Steelers are trying to win the lottery. They either land a solid quarterback, or they waste their time and recourses in developing and training a dud and bust. Signing Dwayne Haskins may be low risk, but it is still a mistake.
