In an attempt to jump-start the team for the back half of the season, the Phillies have called up their No. 6 prospect, Johan Rojas.
Rojas, 22, has always been a speed and defensive kind of player. He struggles with elevating the ball, causing him to ground out quite a lot. However, that does at least play to his elite speed but will need to be addressed to compete against MLB pitching.
With Christian Pache on the 10-day IL, it seems that Rojas will serve as the replacement. Both are very similar players but maybe Rojas can provide more of an offensive impact as well. Something that Pache has always struggled to do at a consistent level.
At the Double-A level this season he hit .308/.361/.484 with nine home runs, 45 RBIs and 30 stolen bases on 38 attempts.
Now, I doubt he replicates that .308 batting average or gets on base nearly as much at this level. But if he can even be a .250 type of hitter and steal a ton of bases, then he can be a huge asset for this Phillies team — especially with the elite defense he will be giving the team in the outfield.
I’m really excited to see Rojas’ debut. He has the potential to be that spark plug, which is just what the Phillies need right now.
It was a slow start, similar to last year, but Philly got hot in June and July, also like last year. Still, the team has to avoid getting complacent. A division title is out of the picture with the Braves being the Braves, but a wild card spot is still up for grabs. The Phillies, of all teams, should know how much damage you can do as a wild card team.
