Pete Alonso wouldn’t change a thing about lengthy 2025 free agency

After a lengthy free agency process that may or may not have caused New York Mets owner Steve Cohen to lose the rest of the little hair on his head, Pete Alonso returned to The Big Apple on a two-year, $54 million deal.

While he didn’t agree to terms until days before Spring Training began, Alonso had no will about his first-career free agency process this winter.

“I have no regrets,” Alonso said, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. “Honestly, with how everything played out, I have no regrets, which is honestly liberating. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Alonso’s $27 million average annual value was slightly above MLB Trade Rumors’ five-year, $125 million projection ($25M AAV). According to Spotrac, Alonso will make $30 million in 2025 with a $24 million player option in 2026.

If Alonso has another productive season, he can opt out and test the market once again, heading into his age-31 season; if he has a poor season or gets hurt, the $24 million option is right there as an expiring contract.

It’s a good deal for both sides. The veteran first baseman is one of the best sluggers in the sport, finishing with the fourth-most home runs (120), seventh-highest isolated power (.250; 156 ISO+) and 20th-highest OPS amongst qualified hitters over the last three combined seasons.

In 2024, Alonso slashed .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs last season. He was a monster in the postseason, helping lead New York to their first NLCS appearance since 2015, sporting a .999 OPS over their unforeseen run.

Should the 2019 Rookie of the Year reach free agency next offseason, he will be one of the best hitters on the market, in addition to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kyle Tucker. He’s betting on himself again, but his track record–plus MLB’s positional scarcity of power-hitting first basemen–could bode well for him if he continues to remain healthy.
