Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has asked for people to have patience and refrain from calling the club guilty of financial breaches. He claimed that the club is innocent until proven guilty and, interestingly enough, gave affirmation that he would remain at the club even if it is expelled from the Premier League.
“You are questioning like we have been punished,” Guardiola said. “At this moment we are innocent until guilt is proved. I know the people want it. I know, I feel it. I will wait. Wait and see it and after the sentence has been done we will come here and explain it. There is more chance to stay if we are in League One than if we win in the Champions League.”
These comments were made following Everton’s shocking 10-point deduction last week that plummeted the Merseyside club back into the relegation fight. This naturally brought attention back to the current Premier League leaders who have a whopping 115 charges against them for financial breaches.
Guardiola argued that Everton’s and City’s situations are different, however, and that everyone needs to wait until the charges are ironed out until they make their judgment.
“I won’t say a word about Everton because I don’t know the reality of what really happened,” Guardiola added. “Maybe you know but [I] asked our team and they are two completely different cases. I know when people are saying — ‘Okay, City – why don’t they go to the Conference?’ Wait. Wait. And after what’s going to happen is going to happen. It’s two different cases. It’s not the same. Honestly. I spoke with my people and said it is completely different. Okay, the other one is longer because it is more complicated because it’s 115 breaches. So wait.”
Charges against City will likely not come for a while due to the complexity of its situation. 115 charges is a lot to go through, meaning any punishment for City will likely not occur this season.
Still, though, Everton’s point deduction may have set an interesting precedent. How fun would it be to see a Guardiola-led City side lighting up League One in a year or two? Count me in.
