Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell has agreed to a four-year, $112 million extension that will make him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL, NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo was the first to report Wednesday.
This deal comes mere hours after the Lions inked All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to a four-year extension. Current Lions general manager Brad Holmes drafted both St. Brown and Sewell during his first season at the helm.
Sewell, 23, was set to enter the fourth year of his rookie contract in 2024 with a cap hit of $7.6 million. His new extension isn’t expected to begin in 2025, which will go through 2029.
The base salary or cap hits are not currently available, at the time of this publishing. But according to Garafolo, the deal will be for $85 million guaranteed, $18 million more than the next-highest guarantee amongst offensive linemen (Andrew Thomas, $67M gtd.), per Spotrac. We’ve seen the offensive line market soar in recent years, so it was smart for Holmes to lock Sewell up when he did.
In just three seasons, Sewell earned two Pro Bowl appearances and earned a first-team All-Pro honoree for the first time in his career this season. You could very easily make the case that he’s the best right tackle in the NFL–ahead of Lane Johnson, Rob Havenstein, Ryan Ramczyk and Brian O’Neill, among others.
He’s the lynchpin to one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, which includes three-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow and left tackle Taylor Decker. What do you think about this record-setting extension? Let us know in the comments!
