Paul Pogba appears to be returning back to his old ways in 2021/22. After a clinical display with 4 assists vs Leeds United, he did it again. The Frenchman set up Mason Greenwood for Manchester United’s only goal in a 1-1 draw at Southampton. Even though United has had a so-so start to the campaign, it is Pogba who deserves loads of credit. Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne are currently tied for the Premier League record for assists in a season with 20. Pogba is already a quarter way towards their record THROUGH 2 GAMES. He became the first player in Premier League history to record 5 assists in a team’s opening two fixtures.
It already seems very likely that Pogba could give this record a run for their money. He has 36 more games to provide 16 assists, nothing too difficult for the former Juventus #10. With notable additions like Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, United and Pogba are hoping for more team success this season. The French maestro will have even more finishers to provide once Marcus Rashford returns from shoulder surgery. Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, and many others will all be hoping for continued excellence in playmaking from #6.
He also could not have picked a better time for a resurgence in form. A free-agent-to-be in 2022, Pogba could command incredible wages once his United contract runs out. Breaking the Premier League record for assists in a season would go a long way to solidifying Pogba as one of the best players on the market. PSG, Real Madrid, and many others clubs would create a huge list of suitors for the World Cup Winner. He is set to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming season but will have a huge decision to make in 2022. At 28 he will no doubt want to win some major trophies. This is a make-it-or-break-it season for United as a failure to win silverware could see their record signing depart for nothing.
Paul Pogba is still an incredible player. His 5 assists in 2 games are more than convincing evidence of that. If this is his last hurrah as a Red Devil, he could end it with some pretty significant records to his name. This is a long season ahead, and it’s only just begun.
