Paul George: 76ers have ‘shown no sign of a team that will compete’

It’s practically a lost season for the Philadelphia 76ers, who have significantly underperformed in a thin Eastern Conference throughout the 2024-25 season.

76ers co-owner Josh Harris was bullish about the team ready to compete deep into the playoffs at the All-Star break, but the team is currently fighting for their life to even make the play-in game. After the team’s 8th straight loss, forward Paul George was very candid about the team’s competitive spirit–or lack thereof–heading into the final 25 games of the season.

“We’ve shown no sign of a team that will compete,” George said, according to PHLY Sports’ Derek Bodner. “We just don’t have the habits of a champion, or a playoff contending team, would have. To be honest, right now it’s a little far-fetched. All we can do is work hard and try to just keep going.”

Currently, the 76ers are the No. 12 seed in the East, 2.5 games back of the Chicago Bulls for the fourth-and-final play-in spot.

Joel Embiid has dealt with an ongoing knee injury since the summer and George hasn’t quite stayed healthy himself. Offseason signee Guerschon Yabusele, Kelly Oubre Jr. and deadline addition Quentin Grimes have all provided sparks, among others. But this team does not have enough offensive juice nor the defensive fortitude to compete on a night-to-night basis.

As it currently stands, the 76ers would keep their top-6 protected pick. That’s what the franchise would be prioritizing at this current stage because they don’t have many quality players on cost-controlled contracts that will help them in the future. Landing a top-6 pick in this class would be huge in terms of upgrading the current floor in addition to their future ceiling.
