The Patriots currently have one quarterback on the roster. It’s Mac Jones and the rest are gone. In one of the most surprising moves on NFL cut day, New England has decided to part ways with backup quarterback Bailey Zappe.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
By the way, New England is also waiving Malik Cunningham. There were reports that Cunningham was going to be the Taysom Hill of this offense. Now he’s gone too. I’m not sure what the Patriots are going to do but they need to find another backup QB ASAP. Maybe one of these guys will be added to the practice squad.
Zappe, 24, had some success a season ago as a rookie. The former Western Kentucky product sported a TD to INT ratio of 5-3 while completing over 70% of his throws. While the move is surprising, at the same token it’s not overly shocking. Zappe has been straight up terrible this preseason. During an extended run in preseason, Zappe was 30-of-51 for 247 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He was also sacked six times and you could clearly see he has deficient arm talent. Just never going to be a arm talent that blows you away. I didn’t view him very favorably during the draft process last year.
We knew that it was going to be the Mac Jones show this season. I’m just not sure anybody had cut both backup quarterbacks on the bingo card for the Patriots. Then again, it’s pretty obvious by now that Bill Belichick is losing him. The Patriots have to find another backup quarterback prior to the start of the season. They’re not just going to go into the season with one guy, right?
