Patriots ‘livid’ after Jack Jones pleads not guilty to gun charges
Jack Jones was arrested Friday after allegedly attempting to bring two loaded guns on a flight at Boston’s Logan Airport. The cornerback is now facing charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a large-capacity feeding device and possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card.
Jones pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Tuesday and posted $30,000 bail.
Jones reportedly could face over 30 years in prison if convicted and sentenced consecutively, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney told the Boston Globe.
According to the Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots are “livid” about Jones’ arrest.
“Putting himself in a position like this is at any time of year, but really like after breaking minicamp and all that stuff, it’s just … they’re livid,” Howe said on “Toucher and Rich” Tuesday morning.
“All Mr. Jones wants to do is play football,” Rosemary C. Scapicchio, Jones’ lawyer, told reporters after the arraignment. “He doesn’t want to be a distraction at all.”
Scapicchio also said Jones “had no intention of bringing any guns onto an airport that day.”
Jones’ Rookie Season
The Patriots drafted Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Arizona State. Immediately, Jones was one of the league’s best corners. The rookie nabbed two interceptions, had six pass break-ups and even recorded a pick-six against now-divisional rival Aaron Rodgers. PFF graded Jones as the 17th-best corner out of 118 qualifying corners last season.
The Patriots suspended Jones for two games at the end of his rookie campaign after a violation of team rules. However, in the spring, Bill Belichick said the suspension was in the past, and Jones was one of New England’s top cornerbacks on their depth chart.
Jones’ Future In New England
It’s unclear how New England will act on the situation and Jones moving forward. The Patriots have only released the following statement about Jones:
“We are in the process of gathering more information and will not be commenting further at this time.”
Jones was expected to be the No. 2 corner this season behind New England’s first-round selection this season, Christian Gonzalez.
